Joshua Ellingson - Audio Reactive Pepper's Ghost

Joshua makes video experiments with synthesizers and his collection of vintage television sets. Many of his projects involve video interacting with free-floating images that appear inside of a bell jar or other clear container. Commonly referred to as "Pepper’is Ghost", these hologram-like illusions are a simple and practical illusion that can allow video to intermingle with reality. The videos often interact in real-time with audio from the synthesizers or other sources via live-performance software typically used by DJs for dance music festivals and concerts.

Joshua Ellingson is an artist working in San Francisco, California. He currently works with electronics to create videos that explore real-time interactions and optical effects.

Victoria Shen - From Scratch

DIY Re-imagining of Turntables and Physical Sound Media

Victoria Shen (she/her) is a sound artist, experimental music performer, and instrument-maker born and raised in San Francisco. Shen's sound practice is concerned with the spatiality/physicality of sound and its relationship to the human body. Her music features analog modular synthesizers, amplified objects, and other self-built electronics. Notably, her debut LP Hair Birth features copper album art that transforms the cover into a speaker through which the record can be played. Shen is also the inventor of Needle Nails, acrylic nails with embedded turntable needles allowing one to play up to 5 tracks of a record at once.

Alex Reben - AI Generated Art

Alexander Reben is an artist and MIT-trained roboticist whose work probes the inherently human nature of the artificial. Using tools such as artificial philosophy, synthetic psychology, perceptual manipulation and technological magic, he brings to light our inseparable evolutionary entanglement to invention which has unarguably shaped our way of being. This “art as experiment” allows us to understand who we are and consider who we will become in our continued co-development with our artificial creations.

Reben’s artwork and research have been shown and published internationally, and he consults with major companies, guiding innovation for the social machine future. He has exhibited at Vitra Design Museum, MAK Museum Vienna, Design Museum Ghent, Vienna Biennale, ARS Electronica alongside IDFA, Tribeca Film Festival, TFI Interactive, Camden Film Festivals, Doc/Fest and the Boston Cyberarts Gallery. His work has been covered by NPR, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Washington Post, Fast Company, Filmmaker Magazine, New Scientist, BBC, PBS, Discovery Channel, Cool Hunting and WIRED, among others. He has lectured at TED, SXSW, TTI Vanguard, Google, UC Berkeley, SMFA, CCA, MIT, and other universities. Reben has built robots for NASA, and is a graduate of the MIT Media Lab, where he studied human-robot symbiosis and art. He is a 2016-2017 WIRED innovation fellow, a Stochastic Labs Resident, and a recent visiting scholar in the UC Berkeley psychology department.
