Scott Kildall - Sensors and Soundscapes

From Joshua Trees to mycelium to air quality, Scott Kildall builds custom electronic sensors that capture invisible phenomena from natural elements, and translates it into soundscapes which visitors can experience as sculptural installations and performances. The sensors can communicate with one another over wifi, and are a comprehensive architecture that can be used to rapidly develop new installations and collaborative possibilities with scientists and other artists. You will see under the hood with a live demo and be able to check out the circuit boards themselves . At the end of the talk, he will share the stage with Michael Ang (Mang), his frequent collaborator, where they will present "Sonogliders", their new collaboration that they will have just finished days before the talk.

Scott Kildall has been working with art + technology + education for over 15 years. His artwork has been exhibited internationally at venues including the New York Hall of Science, Transmediale, the Venice Biennale, the Vancouver Art Gallery and the San Jose Museum of Art. He has received fellowships, awards and residencies from the SETI Institute, The Bloedel Reserve, Impakt Works, Autodesk, Recology San Francisco, Joshua Tree National Park, Eyebeam Art + Technology Center and more. He currently resides in San Francisco, where he runs a residency program from his home called Xenoform Labs that hosts international new media artists.

Michael Ang (aka Mang) - Desert Media Art

How does bringing an artwork outside change its interaction with people and the environment? What new possibilities exist if we create an electronic artwork that can travel with us and be installed anywhere? Michael Ang (aka Mang) creates portable electronic artworks that change our interactions with each other and the environment. Mang will share three projects: Digital Calligraffiti - live projection of calligraphy onto buildings, Desert Media Art - his class on creating electronic artworks for the desert, and Sonogliders - a new environmental sonification performance with Scott Kildall.

Desert Media Art is taught by Michael Ang at New York University Abu Dhabi's Interactive Media program.

Michael Ang is an artist, professor, and engineer who creates light objects, interactive installations, and technological tools that expand the possibilities of human expression and connection. Applying a hacker's aesthetic, he often repurposes existing technology to create human-centered experiences in public space and the open field. Countering the trend for technology to dissociate us from ourselves and surroundings, Michael's works connect us to each other and the experience of the present moment. He is the co-inventor of the Infl3ctor, the projection system for Digital Calligraffiti. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Practice of Interactive Media at New York University Abu Dhabi.

Samuel Coniglio IV (aka Spaceman Sam) - Creature Comforts in Space

How do astronauts take a shower in space? Listen to author Samuel Coniglio talk about his new book "Creature Comforts in Space": designing enjoyment and sustainability for off-world living. A veteran of Maker Faires, RoboGames, and Burning Man, you may know Samuel from his drink-making robots, his Zero Gravity Cocktail Glass, or his Steampunk adventures onboard the Neverwas Haul Victorian house on wheels. Before that, he worked on the Space Shuttle and Space Station programs as a NASA contractor, and later became a space activist promoting Space Tourism. Listen to him discuss how to turn the dangers of space travel into design constraints so that you can make future space stations more fun!

Samuel Coniglio is a space futurist, technical writer, photographer, inventor, and private space industry advocate. He is a board member and former Vice President of the Space Tourism Society. Since 1996, he has been researching and prototyping off-world domestic concepts to make life easier "for the rest of us" in space. His Zero Gravity Cocktail Glass concept won international acclaim and re-invents how to drink liquids in a microgravity environment. Samuel's new book, "Creature Comforts in Space", is a guide for designers to create an enjoyable and sustainable off-world lifestyle for humans onboard the next generation space stations.
